Feng Shui Fallacies

These feng shui fallacies seem to last till today since i started in 1998. 

Ceiling Fan is Bad 气乘风则散 

Ceiling fan is bad feng shui.

Checked with my clients for the reasons. Theories: looks like flying guillotine, should not be in living hall or wealth sector because it dissipate the “Qi 气乘风则散气” instead of “trapping it 藏风聚气”，mounted in bedroom cause high blood pressure etc. It does sound believable at first glance.

Authentic Feng Shui formulas dated back more than 3000 years ago. There were no ceiling fan back then. So all this interpretations you hear today are feng shui masters personal opinions.

Let’s start with logical reasoning. Singapore is a hot and humid. Having a ceiling fan possess good clear benefits. It is better for air movement, lower electricity bills, less sticky and comfortable cooling. It breaks up stagnant indoor humidity and optimizes body comfort.

5 Types of Feng Shui Qi and 2 Main Purposes

Based on feng shui point of view: we classified “qi” or air into 5 types. i prefer to term it as “energy” because it is closer to the actual meaning.  Xuan Kong 玄空五气 Energy Stars is based on timing: they are 旺气wang qi, 生气 sheng qi,  退 煞 死 气. Just guessing from the terminology we know that the first two wang and sheng qi are good. Therefore locate and position our ceiling fan at these 2 positive sectors isn’t it driving positive energy into our house?

Attract and Activate Wealth Energy 三元納氣旺气

There are 2 fundamental feng shui concepts of Qi: One is to accumulate 藏风聚气 keeping the money and the other to attract more money-making opportunities 三元納旺气法. Both are equally important.

One cannot just make a broad, general, sweeping statement that ceiling fan is bad because it does not trap Qi  不能 藏风聚气.

Feng Shui 角煞 Perpendicular 90 Degree Wall

If you look inside your house or look out from your windows you are bound to see objects that are upright at 90 degree. If these are poison arrows you probably have to live on top of mountains. 

角煞 refers to pointed angular walls that looks like an arrow.

Room within a Room and Additional Stove – Mistress 婚外情

I was made aware by my client that there is this youtube video showing that having more than 1 kitchen-stove-burner  灶 or room-within-a-room  房中房 has the good fortune of attracting mistresses.

Can’t imagine having another stove/burner that cost less than $50 improve your opportunities to attract extramarital affair. 

Feng shui are calculated formulas and calculations not making statements unsubstantiated by proof or evidence.

Bed in the Middle of a Bedroom

All those who engaged me sleeping with their bed in the middle of the room done by their previous master, complained of sleeping disorder, insomnia, sickness, low energy etc.

For practical reasons, it is a waste of space. Feng shui is about environment, therefore early human life live at the back of their caves. To feel secure & protected by walls. There is no feeling of “security” floating in the middle of a room with air/energy behind your headboard. More importantly there is no feng shui principle that supports this layout. 

Tilting of Main Door 斜门 

My client was told by his ex-feng shui master because of the main door faces a multi-storey carpark so it is necessary to tilt the door. Let’s give him the benefit of doubt that facing a carpark is bad.

By adjusting the door direction at a small degree, is it possible that the negativity will go away? Because the entire block all facing in this manner. Just by correcting your own door do your think it corrects the entire building orientation?

Dining Mirror 2X your Abundance

Another feedback placing a mirror besides the dining table is doubling your abundance. I told him it can also symbolises gluttony, indigestion & raising cholesterol levels. Because part of feng shui is 化无形 为有形 transforming invisible energy into a “form”.  

Annual D.I.Y. Feng Shui Products 

Placing self-help feng shui items from yearly forecasts without first  checking your home destiny, family gua number/bazi is dangerous

Take this house destiny for example, sitting West facing East. In 2014 auspicious flying star 9 is at North sector. If you activate the North sector by placing plants to enhance fire star 9 and antagonise your Home Destiny Chart 2 5 you are inviting trouble.

North is where 5 and 2 sickness combo resides.  Strong bad earth elements representing misfortune, wealth loss and sickness. Based on feng shui 5-element, wood conquers earth, by challenging the earth element, you are activating the misfortune energy.

Cleansing Power of Feng Shui

What sort of cleansing power you need? for “forms” or “qi”? or both? Most feng shui principles have built-in cures for bad energies. Take for an example 八宅法 8 mansions feng shui,  Tian Yi 天医 positive energy can counter Jue Ming 绝命 negative energy.

Legitimate feng shui remedies conform to 1 or more of the 5 methods i.e. 遮  hide、挡 block、化 dilute、斗 fight 、避 avoid. Any deviations is not authentic practice. 

Or are they trying to sell you their blessed water, amulets, talismans …

Myth 8 Gua Meanings – Southeast is Wealth Sector 

One misleading representation is to directly associate Gua and it’s symbolism. E.g. South-East zone is Wealth sector for every home in the world their wealth sector all the same.  If this is the case feng shui masters does not exist.

Feng Shui Numbers

Feng shui is not a “sound” check tool. 4 is not associated with death and 8 does not mean prosperity. 13 is not unlucky because of the movie Friday the 13th. How “Numbers” is used depends on the context. 

4D Feng Shui Promotion

Some masters lucky numbers or evidence of clients striking lottery. Not sure they are promoting feng shui or gambling. If the master is so good at 4D or toto, i don’t think he need to work. Perhaps he will give you the excuse he don’t have such “偏财运 windfall luck” so is it possible that “all” his customers possess good fortune? 

Footboard not to Face Door 

i was told by my client that he was advised that footboard of the bed should not face the door. Not sure where this come from. Best way to place the bed is at the diagonal corner of the door. Feng shui call it the energy collection point 聚气位. 

Feng Shui Results are Guaranteed

First of all not all negative feng shui energies can be cure 100%. Feng shui can only guarantee improvements and increased opportunities. Professionals like doctors, lawyers…can’t guarantee saving life nor winning a case. Let alone feng shui is not an exact science. Feng shui masters are humans not God.

Moreover there are so many factors that influence our luck e.g. birth profile, effort, luck pillars, personality, work experience, education, birth era and many others. 

Red Colour 

i have consulted some feng shui done by other masters…not sure why their signature application is to put red door mat and hang red cloth at the main door that looks like “wedding” or Chinese New Year celebrations. Chinese culture associate “red” as the auspicious colour.

Red in feng shui represents “the most yang” 阳 energy and “black the most yin” 阴” energy. Red in the 5 element chain represent “fire”. Therefore please be mindful that your “red” item should not be at the sickness zones.

i got a client that is so terrify that they do not dare to cook and order food delivery every day. Which is unhealthy! The misconceptions is stove (burner) against water sink or fridge or washing machine, full details here kitchen feng shui.

Feng Shui Masters Selling Products – Do check Evidence

Lastly feng shui only supplements your life aspects not a miracle performance! Feng shui audit only deals with the the negative energy of your home environment i.e. internal layout & external environment.

There are many factors affect your quality of life such as health, career, harmony, wealth etc. Some of main factors are the country’s culture/economic status you live in, family upbringing, education, personality traits, biological factors, mental attitude, habits, lifestyle and so forth. Not all are creations of feng shui or bazi. Don’t make feng shui the First scapegoat whenever something goes wrong
